Essential power tools for woodworking

Many beginners who try to start in carpentry look at their budgets and are worried about how they can afford to buy a whole store full of electric tools to get started. Fortunately, you do not need to spend a lot of money to start. Actually, there are only a handful of carpentry tools that are highly recommended that every initial carpenter has from the start, and most of them are relatively cheap. With these tools, many first projects can be completed.

A Saw

While some people consider circular saws more like carpentry tools than good woodworking tools, some people don’t agree. There may not be a more versatile handheld electric device that is more flexible than a circular saw. When used with a straight-line clamp, a circular saw can be as accurate as a saw table and handle several tasks that will be worked on with a table saw, especially cutting sheet items such as plywood. When making wood on a limited budget, a quality circular saw must be the first handheld electric appliance purchased, because that will be the most useful when you start.

Electric drill

Some might be thinking they would see cordless drills here, but when thinking about basic tools for woodwork, the corded variety is more flexible and stronger. There are a number of options to consider when choosing a corded electric drill, such as whether you want 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch chucks, key chuck or no key, straight drill or hammer, and so on.

Electric jigsaw

The next important tool for beginners is the Jigsaw. Jigsaws allow users to make curved cuts and circular patterns in stock. Of course, band saws are likely to be have better accuracy and can cut thicker timber, but for beginners, jigsaws can be very effective. For a broader range of uses, choose one with an orbital action and that’s corded, allowing for greater comfort in the hand and with a simple blade replacement method.

Orbital Sander

This is the next most important basic handheld electric appliance that must be purchased by every beginner. While palm sanders are cheaper and can use ordinary sandpaper, random orbital versions use hook-and-loop sanding disks tied, and not sanded in patterns, using random sanding movements instead. This movement will serve to reduce the possibility that sanding marks can appear in the stock due to sanding. Of course, make sure that your local woodworking supplier has sanding discs available in a number of grits to fit the model you choose, because the key to proper sanding is to use finer grit progressively when you sand to reduce or eliminate marks that left behind from the previous sanding.
