How to manage hypertension

High blood pressure also known as hypertension is something that a lot of people in the UK and all around the world suffer with. This means that the pressure of blood in the veins is above a healthy level, which can lead to lots of problems, some of which can be severe and life threatening. It can also cause a strain on other parts of the body – organs such as the eyes and the heart are often affected by hypertension.

There are many reasons why people may suffer from high blood pressure. Some people are genetically more at risk of developing it if there are other people in the family who have it, people over the age of 65 are more at risk of having it, as well as lifestyle factors such as drinking too much alcohol, low exercise and smoking.

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you may be given medication by your doctor. You can also make lifestyle changes that will help with it. Some changes that you can make to ensure that it doesn’t get any worse are:

 

Giving up smoking

Cutting down on alcohol

Reducing the amount of salt in your diet

Cutting down on fatty foods – for example grill food rather than frying

Doing more exercise
