How to create automatic backups with Windows 10 file history

Windows 10 includes an enhanced version of the backup tools that were introduced in Windows 8 and 8.1. This feature, known as File History, is a major change over the hard disk image-based backup program that Windows 7 had.

Using the default settings, File History saves copies of the files every hour, giving you the option of going back to an earlier version of a particular one or restoring all data once you reinstall Windows.

How to activate the File History

Enabling File History is really simple if you have any separate system disk storage. Simply connect an external USB memory or MicroSD card, then go to the path Configuration> Update and security> Backup and activate the Automatically back up my files option . If you have more than one unit you will have to specify which one you want to use.

If you click More options you can configure the refresh rate and how long the backups will be saved. You can also see a list of folders that can be saved automatically, with controls to add or remove locations from that list.

If you have a laptop you do not have to leave the backup unit connected constantly. Just do it occasionally and wait for the copy to take place or click on Backup Now.

If you prefer to use a hard drive on a network you can do it if you know where to look. In the Advanced Settings section, a Control Panel style window will appear. Click Select Disk, and then click Add Network Locations.
